happy. That in life, material goods aren\u2019t important, as our bond with our family is a strong enough foundation to weather any storm that may cross our paths. But as much as we want that to be true, when times get tough, I\u2019m sure many of us are aware that love may not always be enough. While emotional connection remains an essential part of families, practical factors may also shape family dynamics and how family members may interact with one another.<\/p><p>In fact, our study suggests that financial capacity and resources may be one of the factors that influence how family members experience their roles, responsibilities, and autonomy.<\/p><p>Our study involved Gen-Z participants as survey respondents, whose responses were then reviewed by three experts. The findings suggest an association between financial circumstances and family enmeshment, although this relationship appears to depend on pre-existing dynamics within the family.<\/p><p>Interestingly, our survey participants, who all came from middle- to upper-income backgrounds, described their financial stability as giving them greater space to explore their identities and interests because they experienced fewer financial responsibilities. This reflects the findings of Chua et al. (2022), who stated:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3082d7d e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3082d7d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5c7ad0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5c7ad0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cNext to comfortable lifestyle, financial security and stability emerged as another salient dimension of Filipino FWB across all income strata and locale (urban or rural).\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d4213f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8d4213f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our experts also noted that individuals who had experienced parentification\u2014 the process in which children take on responsibilities typically associated with adults\u2014 and had less financial capacity could have potentially felt more pressured to help and provide for their family. This may be due to the fact that the increased financial strain may contribute to children feeling obligated to sacrifice their own needs for their family. This also aligns with Chua et al.\u2019s (2022) findings, wherein participants emphasized that <em>\u201cto achieve family wellbeing, a family should have savings to rely on during emergencies.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>On the other hand, if children are not given responsibilities or opportunities to develop them, this may contribute to infantilization by their guardians. Infantilization refers to situations in which teenagers or adults are treated as children despite being capable individuals, potentially limiting their sense of autonomy and agency. In doing so, the child&#8217;s skills may not fully develop as they are not given opportunities to make decisions or take on responsibilities appropriate for their capabilities.\u00a0<\/p><p>Taken together, these findings suggest that financial circumstances may interact with existing family dynamics in shaping a young person\u2019s opportunities for independence. Financial capacity alone does not determine whether a family dynamic is healthy or unhealthy. Rather, families may need to balance financial realities with opportunities for their members to develop practical skills, exercise autonomy, and pursue their own wants and needs.<\/p><p>Although financial stability can provide opportunities and security in certain aspects of life, family relationships remain a careful balancing act between the practical realities of life and the developmental needs of each family member. Members need opportunities to learn responsibilities, make decisions, and understand their own wants and needs while still receiving appropriate support from their families.<\/p><p>Ultimately, we wish to highlight that financial circumstances may be an important factor in understanding family dynamics. The presence or absence of financial stability may shape how family members experience responsibilities, autonomy, and emotional well-being, particularly when considered alongside pre-existing family relationships.
