and have the ability to influence the other (American Psychological Association Division 12, 2017).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>To illustrate, the graph below breaks down the difference between these data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>While these concepts are usually interchanged with one another, mixing them may result in cognitive distortions. Since our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected \u2013this may also easily create negative feedback loops if our thoughts are distorted (Chand et. al, 2023).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>For example, <\/strong>having an automatic thought that says, <strong>&#8220;I feel like a failure, so I am a failure.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><ol><li>Here, defining oneself as a\u00a0<em><strong>failure\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em>is not an emotion, but an automatic\u00a0<strong>thought<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li><li>While the\u00a0<em><strong>guilt and shame\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>in response to an event, is the<em> <strong>emotion.<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li>However, once you\u00a0<em><strong>interpret\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>the emotion and event as something negative that defines your character, the interpretation is the\u00a0<em><strong>feeling.<\/strong><\/em><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e409701 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e409701\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Reevaluating Thoughts and Feelings <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30f62c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"30f62c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These negative automatic thoughts when repeated can become a core belief about oneself. So, instead of immediately identifying oneself as a failure, it can help to name the emotion such as \u201c I am feeling really guilty and shameful right now\u201d.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This allows you to not attack your own character, and focus on getting curious about where those thoughts come from. This technique is called \u2013Reattribution, where we are taught to reevaluate our interpretations and how we assign blame (Burns, 2012). If you\u2019d like to know more about cognitive distortions and how to combat them, the books \u201cFeeling Good: The New Mood Therapy\u201d or \u201cFeeling Great: The Revolutionary New Treatment for Depression and Anxiety\u201d by Psychiatrist David Burns, discusses these in more depth.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a6c25d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3a6c25d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Our Logic is tied to our Emotions<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0430561 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0430561\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>However, if your emotions feel intense, it is helpful to pause, and focus on grounding yourself first such as breathing exercises, walking, or music (Although different folks have different strokes, so, feel free to do what works for you as these are just general examples).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>According to Damasco (2004), our brain or limbic system processes emotions first, before we can think of a logical reason \u2013this is called Emotional Primacy. We then try to explain those emotions using logic or the automatic thoughts that pop up (Schacter &amp; Singer, 1962). However, automatic thoughts that are often negative and intrusive can be prone to cognitive distortion.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>For example, during a state of experiencing intense negative emotions, you may find yourself stuck thinking about cognitive distortions. A few examples from David Burns\u2019 Books include:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ol><li><strong>Should statements\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;I\u00a0<em><strong>should\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em>be happy because I&#8217;m not suffering as much as others.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li><strong>All or Nothing thinking\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;m\/They&#8217;re\u00a0<strong>always\u00a0<\/strong>breaking things.&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>Mind Reading\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;They probably think I&#8217;m weak and incompetent.&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>Emotional Reasoning\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; &#8220;I feel like a failure, so I am a failure.&#8221;<\/li><\/ol><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Instead of challenging these intrusive thoughts, your brain may exaggerate the negative, minimize the positive, or cherry-pick what aligns with your current views \u2013which then feeds into one\u2019s distress even more\u2013 eventually distorting your perceptions about people, situations, and or reality.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e74a5f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4e74a5f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">So, What Can I Do?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b85535e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b85535e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Ideally and generally, it is still recommended for individuals to go to mental health providers. They can help people to identify and challenge cognitive distortions that may stem from distressing situations, trauma, or abuse.
